How Not to Fall on the Ice

There are massive ice storms in the Midwest. And here in Boston, we’ve had treacherously icy sidewalks and streets for days. So I went online and ordered a pair of these:

Stabilicers.jpg

They are called Stabilicers and they are from L.L. Bean. They slip on to any pair of shoes and they will keep you from slipping around. This is especially helpful for people who need to walk every day (dog owners like me) or those who have stability problems. A bunch of different companies make them and some call them Yak Trax. You may consider making this investment for yourself, your kids or your aging parents. Just $20.

They sound like a very good idea. All the pathways and roads in my estate are smooth Tarmacadam and treacherous with the slightest touch of frost.

I’ve seen these in the catalogs. I’d definitely get a pair if I ever get to spending winters in Floyd.

I started to leave the house yesterday to walk the dog…and quickly came back to slip those on. They work wonderfully well!

  4. Hattie Says:

My sympathies to all of you. I took a horrid fall on the ice, once. It’s no joke.

  5. Brian Says:

Brilliant! You’ve just given me the final thing I needed to buy for my wife for Christmas.

  6. Rhea Says:

    Grannymar: Your estate!?
Janet: Then you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Oh, Hattie. Of course someone from Hawaii had to write in to make us feel lousy about living in a four-season place.

    Brian: YES!!

I got these for my husband and stepfather for Christmas last year. I got them from a different catalog which I now can’t remember, and they were called YaxTrax, but the same thing basically. Scott used them a few times, but I don’t think my folks ever got enough snow for Pop to use them. He was tickled with them though.

The military gave those to us for free while we were stationed in Alaska. They work really well!!!

I’m definitely going to get these. There is nothing worse than a slippery feeling under your foot if you’re not on skates

I highly recommend yaktrax (which are slightly different from what you have pictured). My pair has saved me numerous times.

Oh my, I should really go that route except that an older colleague has gleefully called them “Geezer Grips” and that kinda cut the fun …

I NEED THESE!! Thanks for posting!

[...] I received my Stabilicers (the things you attach to your shoes that prevent you from slipping on the ice) in the mail last week and not a moment too soon. As they say, Stabilicers are “like studded tires for your feet.” We had two big storms in Boston recently and I got through them just fine with my new treads. One caution: They have the opposite effect indoors. I almost fell twice. Take them off. [...]
