Am I the Last Non-Vegan Left on Earth?

Everything’s coming up vegan these days. My local bakery, Fiore’s, just introduced a line of vegan pastries, the new restaurant in the hood is featuring vegetarian and vegan-y dishes, and a new, independently owned vegan ice cream parlor called Wheeler’s is scheduled to open up in Boston in March.

Last night Wheeler’s held a free tasting, so my vegan friend Amanda and I went down to Massachusetts Avenue to the still-under-construction storefront. Among a crowd of about 60 people, we sampled an array of ice creams. The flavors were intense, unlike any other ice cream I’ve ever tried. We tasted: champagne (like a sparkling New Year’s party in your mouth), green tea (turning Japanese), pumpkin (sweet but not too sweet), peanut butter and banana (with gigantic, chewy hunks of peanut butter), and chocolate peppermint (just like Girl Scouts Thin Mints but more refreshing). I’m sold on it. I will be going back when they open. Here are some resources on veganism:

Vegan Outreach (answers the question, Why Vegan?)

Vegan Momma (a popular blog)

The fact that I am not vegan doesn’t mean I won’t eat vegan food. Isn’t it interesting that chocolate always passes the test, no matter what the philosophy or lifestyle?

Well…this is serendipitous…I just met a woman who lost a LOT of weight being a vegan, so i’ve been thinking of exploring it, but now that you mentioned the delicious ice cream you’ve definitely hit my weak spot :)
(thus the reason I need to lose weight )

You are probably not the last non-vegan left on the earth! :) But remember that it’s a lot easier for you, a non-vegan, to eat in a vegan restaurant than it is for a vegan to eat in a non-vegan restaurant. Nice to see more places catering to vegan palates (and doing so in a way that makes their food yummy for all!). Wish I could have made it to the tasting!

And Grace, chocolate only passes “the test” for a vegan if it’s non-dairy. Luckily I like dark chocolate -way- better than I do milk chocolate, but it’s amazing how many dark chocolates still add milk or milk by-products, and therefore don’t pass, at least for me.

And psychscribe, it’s still possible to gain weight on a vegan diet! Just chow down on things like vegan cakes & ice cream… :) That being said, I admit I’m down 40 lbs from my highest weight after going vegan. But I still have to be careful not to pig on the vegan junk food…

Nope. I haven’t boarded the vegan train, either. I like animals; some of them are quite tasty.

Definitely a carnivore. I like meat. If I had to kill it myself, I’d probably be a vegetarian, but I don’t. So, mark me down as a carnivore and a hypocrite.

I guess they didn’t have an ice cream that tasted like “beouf au jus”.

Philip: The owner is going to introduce interesting new flavors on a regular basis. I would not be surprised if he creates the one you suggest.

This is not the first time I’ve found myself agreeing with Suldog. I am married to a vegetarian, so we never have meat in the house, but I do eat steak and hamburgers on the rare occasions we go out. Our niece was vegan for about 3 years, but she was down to such an unhealthy weight, she added dairy back in. I would probably survive (though not happily) as a vegetarian, but I would absolutely starve to death as a vegan. I really do not like vegetables, though I do eat them, and dairy is my primary source of nutrition.

My daughter is a vegan, but I’m not planning on switching anytime soon.
