Local Ice Cream Manufacturer Turns 100

I like history and today I realized that a local ice cream manufacturing company is turning 100 years old this year. It’s called Puritan Ice Cream and it’s housed in an unassuming building in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston. I’ve passed the building a million times. The company has been owned by the same family all these years. Now, I’ve never tasted Puritan Ice Cream because it appears that they sell it only in 3-gallon containers.

Plus, the only flavor they have is vanilla. ;-p

Three gallon containers? That would be like a couple of servings to those of us who love ice cream.

They make champagne ice cream! Never had it, have you?

Fenix: I haven’t had their version, but I did have the vegan type of champagne ice cream at the place that’s supposed to open up on Mass. Ave. All vegan ice cream. The champagne was fantastic.

Yumm-O! Well, I guess I’m going to be tasting some ice bubbly pretty soon… ;D

I would have thought that this was a hoax – vegan champagne ice cream, indeed – were it not for the fact that I too have driven past Puritan many times.

A former colleague of mine (when I worked at the Hebrew Rehab) used to buy the big tubs of Puritan’s Frozen Pudding flavor ice cream, and she said it was amazing. Frozen Pudding is pretty much the same as Rum Raisin, with a few different little dried fruits in there, so I was always tempted when I lived nearby … but I was afraid that I might actually eat it all in 1 or 2 sittings if it was good. My gastro-intestinal tract has been grateful ever since.

(N.B. to Andrew: If you re-read the previous comments, you’ll see that the vegan version of champagne ice cream is NOT available at Puritan, but at that new place, Wheeler’s Vegan Ice Cream, which I don’t think has opened yet.)

I’ve always wondered what the deal was with that place
