Small Town Values? I Gotz ‘Em

I’m from a small town in New Jersey, and I’m politically progressive in every possible way. Watch this clip from The Daily Show, in which people attending the Republican National Convention spoke about their views on small-town values. According to them, smalls towns are all about being conservative. The video is spot-on, hilarious, 4.5 minutes long, and worth every second. Hat tip to my friend Chris at Outside the Lines for pointing this out to me. He’s from a small town in Michigan.

One thing I’ve noticed about people from small towns is the more “liberal” ones tend to move from those said small towns. There may be a kernel in truth in Obama’s observation about some of these townspeople.

Now I am saying this from the perspective of an East Coaster who has never lived anywhere else besides Richmond VA – which was way too conservative for me (and my late father-in-law). So perhaps I am being too elitist!

Emily, Yeah, I moved to Boston from my little town.

Emily, you may be on to something. I grew up in a very small conservative town in Northeastern PA and I moved from there just as soon as I was able – and haven’t been back 10 times to visit in the 30 years since I left. Now I don’t consider myself extraordinarily “liberal”, but after watching this, perhaps I’m not as conservative as I thought.

Thanks for the laugh, Rhea. This was too funny and yet, right on target.

I moved to Buffalo (NY) from my small town…I’m sensing a pattern here.

I heard one RNC delegate says “America is a nation of Wasillas, not a nation of Chicagos”. That could not be further from the truth. The urban population of the U.S. dwarfs the rural population, which is why all those Red vs. Blue electoral maps are so deceiving to look at — it looks like a lot of red, but those are all very EMPTY places.

The Republicans wish very hard that it was still 1955, and will put on whatever blinders are necessary to keep it looking that way to them. They’ve got themselves convinced that a white trash woman from Alaska is their magic ticket back to the past and will ignore anything that indicates otherwise.

I saw this when the aired it and it cracked me up. I loved them all stammering while trying to give an example of “small town values.”

Can I tell you my (alabama!) small town values? Gay people getting hitched’ and abortions for everyone! Take that you California Liberuls!

  7. The Midlife Crisis Queen Says:

Thanks Rhea for that refreshing comedy relief from this generally nauseating political season so far….I KNOW who the PIG is with the LIPSTICK NOW thanks to that viral e-mail from her old friend in Wasilla.
    WATCH OUT FOR SARAH BARRACUDA!!!

  8. Linda Says:

My family is from a small town in Connecticut originally but having had a father who was career military, I had the chance to live many, many other places than in a small town. Small towns do have their values but they don’t speak for the entirety of America.

Of course, I just love Jon Stewart and The Daily Show so this was hilarious no matter where you grew up or live now!

Hysterically funny and sad, too, that we can still harbor this level of discrimination in our great country and disguise it as patriotism and conservative values. Guess that’s why I’m a Democrat. Thanks for the laugh.
