RV Trip: A Wrapup of the Week

We returned the Roadtrek to the RVIA in Reston, Virginia, this morning at 10 a.m. It was sad to say goodbye. I must say, I had a blast! I loved driving the RV, cooking in it, sleeping in it, watching DVDs on the flat-screen TV in it. I could see owning one of these rigs sometime. Here’s how the week went:

DROVE: 1,200 miles

LOVED: Southern fried chicken; Cade’s Cove (Tennessee); historic Michie Tavern in Charlottesville, Virginia; Pam from Tennessee; the drive between Kingsport, Tenn., and Asheville, North Carolina; the little town of Jonesborough, Tenn.; the friendly folks in the RV campgrounds.

NEVER KNEW: Tennessee was so crazy for buffets. Every restaurant seemed to feature a buffet.

SPENT: From $25-$47 for a campsite.

FOR THE FIRST TIME I: pumped sewage from an RV; met real hillbillies and drank moonshine; ate PB&J sandwiches for breakfast many mornings in a row; held a rifle.

We are contemplating an RV the size and general shape of yours. You need to tell me if that’s the wrong way to go for two retired fat people!

  2. Tug Says:

Sounds like you had a blast! I’ve thought often about just selling everything & living out of an RV…

  3. Linda Says:

Could a vacation be more fun than yours? I have really enjoyed the tales of your journey south!

  8. Rhea Says:

Mushy, funny you should mention fat. We both thought that the shower and toilet, in particular, would be very uncomfortable for someone fat. I think a larger model would work for you.
    Tug, me, too!
TO EVERYONE: I am so grateful for all your comments during this RV trip. It was like having friends back home sharing in the adventure. Thanks so much!

So, what kinda gas mileage did you get overall?

    ~ hb33 ~

  10. Rhea Says:

Honeybee, the mileage was excellent. We were using diesel, not gas, so we got about 20 mpg. That’s very good for an RV.

I’m so bummed that you were so close to me and I didn’t get to catch up. I’m still trying to catch up on people’s blogs that I haven’t read since mid-September. It’s not going speedily, because people just keep on writing, thus giving me even more great stuff to read!
I’m glad you had a good trip and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the posts.

  12. Rhea Says:

Janet, next time I do a road trip I want it to be so leisurely that I can meander and visit with people and have time to do everything I want. That would be the life!

Loved the stories from the RV trip — they brought back all sorts of memories of traveling by RV with my parents when I was a kid!

Though when I was last staying at a campground, in 1989 or so, $25 was how much it cost for a night at the most expensive campground we could find (Disney World in Florida, but well worth the extra cost!). Most were in the $10-$15 range. So even campgrounds are more expensive these days…

  14. Rhea Says:

FMS,. glad you enjoyed the RV tales. I was taken by surprise by the $40-something camps. That seemed awfully expensive. I mean, you could get a motel room in some parts of the country for that price.

  15. Hattie Says:

I loved the picture of you. It’ nice to know what my blogger friends look like.
Glad you had such a wonderful time. But only a week? I’ll bet you could have enjoyed more time than that.

  16. Rhea Says:

Hattie, did you see the pic of me with the gun, earlier in the week? I wanted SEVERAL weeks, but I couldn’t get it.

  17. gyma Says:

I’m coming late to this party, but wanted you to know I enjoyed reading through the RV posts. Even reading them though, it felt like it went too darn quickly.

I’m trying to convince my hubby to sell everything and go, but he’s hesitant. Probably thinks we’ll end up torturing each other!!

  18. Rhea Says:

Gyma, I am so happy you enjoyed it. It did go kind of fast. I recommend trying it. I had a total blast!

Hi Rhea: I’ve just returned from my “leaf peeping”tour of the northeast and am caching up on my blog reading. Yours was one of the first I turned to because on my most recent trip (you know how much I like to travel) I decided that as soon as my Key West house sells I am going to buy a small RV and just stay on the road all the time – blogging all the way. So, it was great to hear how much you liked your trip and the RV. Thanks so much for sharing your trip!

  20. Rhea Says:

Barbara, You will love it. I did!
