Two RV Companies File for Bankruptcy
I've Moved! The Boomer Chronicles has closed after 6 years, but you can keep up with me on my new blog at http://www.rheabecker.com
We know you boomers love yer RVs, but the fact is that sales are down and the industry is going to have struggle through. Two RV companies — Monaco and Country Coach — just declared bankruptcy. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), the fine people who lent a gorgeous RV to yours truly last fall, predicts 2009 will be a rough RV year:
As the current recession is expected to affect all sectors of the economy, RV shipments are expected to be lower in 2009 as well. Credit restrictions are causing RV buyers to delay purchases and RV dealers to keep inventories low. Sales in 2009 will be affected by stringent credit standards, falling employment, and continued declines in household wealth and home prices.

We did our part and bought a trailer a few weeks ago. Obviously, it wasn’t enough.

How is Roadtrek doing… that’s the one that always interested me?
Of course, that is the me that does not have a car but if Zipcar ever added a Roadtrek, I’d have it reserved in a heartbeat.

As we drove down I-5 from Seattle to Portland recently we saw many RV dealerships full of rolling stock but hardly any on the road. It does not look good.

Penny, Roadtrek is the brand I had! They are Canadian. I have not heard anything except when I was borrowing the Roadtrek from the RVIA, I know the vehicle loan program was ceasing. Roadtreks are absolutely amazing! Have you been in one?

Very sad. I’m sure this is true with other luxury items. I went to the Annapolis Boat Show last fall with my cousin. I am wondering if some of the boat manufacturers will go out of business. Not the yacht builders, but companies that build boats for upper middle class and below.

I think there will be an enormous shakeout of products except for the highly discounted necessities.
