I’m Glad My Surgeon is Middle-Aged
OK, so I’m going to be having some surgery. I was going to try not to write about this at all on this here blog because I can’t stand self-indulgent, here’s-what-I-ate-for-breakfast-type blogs but I am sort of obsessed with this right now and find it hard to write about anything else. So, the two most important things about this surgery are: it’s nothing life-threatening (phew!), and, after much research, I found an amazing woman to do it. She’s just a year or so younger than I am, so being at midlife, she has been surgery-ing for a couple of decades now. There’s nothing like a baby boomer surgeon to instill confidence. Besides that, her credentials are stellar.
Funny, younger people may at times put down middle-aged people, but when you’re having surgery or taking a commercial flight, don’t you really want someone middle-aged in charge?

It is a bit disconcerting to have a doctor that is young enough to be your own child.

Jodi, I am happy to say I’ve never had that experience!

actually, when my partner had a double organ transplant this past August, I was very glad that her main surgeon was a younger man. The surgery itself was more than 12 hours, and he was with us from first thing in the morning. I can not imagine someone my age doing the kind of difficult surgery that was required. When I saw him in the icu, i was yawning (i had no sleep for more than 24 hours) at 1am, but he was getting ready to do another transplantation in the morning.
Hope your surgery is a simple one and goes well.

I pray all goes well. Confidence in your surgeon is very important to the process.

Just wanted to second what you said about your surgeon. I serve on the Board of Trustees of my college and last fall one of the college mailings contained a picture of the President and her Cabinet (Dean of the Faculty, Dean of Students, VP for Finance and Administration, etc.). All are women over the age of 50 except for one guy, most have grey hair and a few wrinkles, and the picture was reassuring and inspiring in surprising ways: there’s no question that the college is in good hands, being led and nurtured by wise and experienced women. It made me wonder what the world would look like if middle-aged women were in charge of everything!
Wishing you an uneventful procedure and a speedy recovery!

Point taken. And I couldn’t agree more. Sending prayers and blessings your way!

Hope all goes well. I agree – getting doctors fresh out of med school makes me nervous.

Hope all goes well with your surgery. When is it scheduled for and what hospital? I won’t trust my body to anyone else other than a middle-aged, menopausal, hotflashing GYN. She saved me from a needless surgery and is the reason I wrote WHATEVER! A Baby Boomer’s Journey Into Middle Age.
