35 Years Later, ‘A Chorus Line’ Lives On

When I entered college in 1976, there was one record that everyone in my dorm played over and over and over: the cast album to A Chorus Line. Last night, I went to a sneak preview of the new film Every Little Step, a fabulous documentary about the history of the hit Broadway show A Chorus Line and its 2006 revival. For the first time, Actors’ Equity allowed filmmakers to document the auditions for the revival show. It’s an amazing fly-on-the-wall look at how difficult it is to audition for — and cast — a major show that requires all of its performers to be triple threats: singers, actors and dancers. A Chorus Line is almost 35 years old now, and Marvin Hamlisch’s music and Edward Kleban’s lyrics can still give you chills. The film incorporates the voice of the late Michael Bennett, creator of the show, along with tons of audition footage. There’s also a good deal of eavesdropping on the creative team as they pick and choose among the auditioners. Here is the trailer for Every Little Step.

Wow, I was obsessed with that musical. I must have seen it five time and listened to the soundtrack on my tape deck until the tape stretched. Can’t wait to see this film with my son, who is also smitten. Thanks, Rhea, for the memories.
