A Rally to Save the Boston Globe
Today at historic Faneuil Hall, a rally was held to save the 137-year-old Boston Globe. I would be heartbroken if this institution closed. The rally attracted citizens of Boston, readers and advertisers, union members at the Globe and from other unions, kids, and lots of press. I took a few pictures. From top left are: Dan Totten, president, Boston Newspaper Guild; a Globe and Sox fan; Jeannie Shimkus, a Boston Globe 40-year employee and classified advertising rep (and an endangered species; Dorothy Clark, a 14-year employee and a news copy editor; a gathering of media at the rally; another reader; members of the Car Men’s union who came out to support the
Globe workers.

I hate to see newspapers going out of business. I hope it’s saved.

I, too, hate to see newspapers going out of business but I also see how some of them met their demise. Not grabbing hold of the internet opportunities has hurt many of them. I read recently about what happened between the Globe and MonsterJobs.com–a MISSED opportunity indeed.
The sad thing is with more and more newspapers folding up for good, you’re going to have more and more citizen journalists out there and that won’t be good at all–as bad as or worse than Fox News.

I fear that Google, Yahoo, and other Internet news sites have had a permanent impact on the newspaper industry. The technological generation can’t slow down long enough to read an entire newspaper. It’s very sad. With the loss of the newspapers, dies the art of journalism as we have known it.
