The Weekend Fishermen of Boston Harbor

So I rode my bike down to Boston Harbor this morning and did my usual rounds (past Harpoon Beer, the fisheries, the Pavilion) when I spotted about a dozen mostly middle-aged guys with fishing rods. They were gathered on a pier near the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal and were actually fishing in Boston Harbor! This astounded me because anyone who’s lived in Boston knows the history of the harbor and how polluted it has been. True, it’s getting better, but fishing in the harbor!? I asked the guys if they eat what they catch. Mostly the answer was no. But they know a few guys who don’t make a lot of money and appreciate the free food. They eat it. I witnessed a guy catch a striped bass (click on my photos below). They measured the lovely specimen (if it’s too small it has to be tossed back in) and it came to 31 inches. These guys told me they’re down there every weekend. This was a slice of Boston I never knew existed.
