Four Reasons We Need Health Care Reform Now

President Barack Obama wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times last week on four reasons we need health care reform now. Every American should read it. Here are a few lines from the piece:

  • No one in America should go broke because they get sick.
  • We are already closer to achieving health-insurance reform than we have ever been.
  • We have the American Nurses Association and the American Medical Association on board…
  • If we maintain the status quo, we will continue to see 14,000 Americans lose their health insurance every day.
  • I don’t have to explain to the nearly 46 million Americans who don’t have health insurance how important this is. But it’s just as important for Americans who do have health insurance.
  • A 2007 national survey actually shows that insurance companies discriminated against more than 12 million Americans in the previous three years because they had a pre-existing illness or condition.

what we need r jobs. where r the jobs? obama can offer the greatest health care in the world but without a job, who will pay? certainly not me. i don’t have a job. and if people keep losing their jobs and can’t pay taxes, then what?

america is practically broke. people are holding on by their pinkie finger nails and this dude is talking about health care for all.

what r u goin 2 do when u lose ur job? whoz payin urs?

As I have said before, we do not need to overhaul the health care system to accomplish these goals. We do need to:

    1. Provide an insurer of last resort (like an “assigned risk” pool) for those who cannot afford health insurance due to temporary unemployment or under-employment and for those with pre-existing conditions.

    2. Provide a means for small businesses to get a large break on health insurance costs (co-op’s or associations) and allow federal licensing of insurance companies (meaning they can provide insurance coverage in any state).

This will solve the major problems without impacting in any way the 85% who are happy with the way things are.

    Right Rhea!
In addition, everyone in the U.S. is just one job loss or medical emergency away from medical bankruptcy. And our whole government will be bankrupt soon from the rising costs of medical costs if we don’t do something now!

    What a country!
