Meeting Lots of Unemployed Media Professionals
I went to a cocktail hour last night for Boston-area media professionals. It was really well attended and I met lots of interesting people. My Tom Collins wasn’t that tasty, but I will let that pass. The point is, everyone wore a name tag that gave their job title. My day job is “editor.” I can’t tell you how many people — of all ages — came up to me with tags that read “Freelance writer” and asked if I had work. This made me feel both lucky to be employed and sad for the folks who need work. I met seasoned writers and editors from a large newspaper in New Hampshire, a young transplant from Chicago who wanted work as a reporter, and a woman from New York who said it took her a year to find a job in publishing. This was a reality check for me. It’s really rough out there.
