Staycation: Visiting the Graves of Thoreau and Contemporaries

HD_Thoreau_graveYesterday was cloudy, windy and gray — a perfect day to do some gravehopping over in nearby Concord, Mass. The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, a very short distance from Concord Center, is an ancient burial ground that features “Authors Ridge,” the final resting places of some of America’s most important early writers. My friend and I visited the graves of Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Louisa May Alcott. Here are a few pics. I’m feeling all New England-y right now.

What a coincidence — we visited Author’s Ridge last weekend! It’s been one of those “must go see someday” items on our list for ages, and the weather was so nice (as compared to this weekend) that we ended up wandering around Concord and decided the time had come to pay our respects. They aren’t just kidding about the “ridge”, that’s quite a steep climb to the top.

Sleepy Hollow is on my list of places to see here in New Englnad, especially having been to the other Sleepy Hollow in New York this past summer. Perhaps when I take Amanda up to visit Montserrat College in Beverly next month would be a good time to stop by. You’ve inspired me!

We visited the same cemetery an number of years ago. I worked as a grounds keeper in a cemetery while in high school so in an odd sort of way, they are special places to me.

    This sounds interesting!

Mass. is so incredibly rich with history and there is so much to see and learn statewide. I would love to spend all my time visiting and seeing it all – seems like it would take a lifetime to take it all in.

Rhea, you are so fortunate to be where you are!

Brian, cool that you were just there.
Linda, Concord itself is great. Not only the cemetery but the Alcott House, the Concord Museum, etc. Lots of cool stuff.
Steve, I love cemeteries, too. We’re weird, I guess.
Linda, thanks for reminding me that I am in a good place. Sometimes I think of leaving Boston for warmer climes.
