The Secret to De-Skunking Your Dog
I've Moved! The Boomer Chronicles has closed after 6 years, but you can keep up with me on my new blog at http://www.rheabecker.com
My beautiful pup (that’s him in the photo) has not yet been skunked, but I know it will happen one day, so I want to be ready.
Here is a guaranteed solution and I would like to share it with you. A veterinarian here in the Boston area swears by it!
2 pints hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
2 tablespoons liquid dish detergent
1 pint of tomato juiceMix ingredients just before bathing.
Bathe pet in above formula and leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
Here is a randomly selected dog site you can visit.

Won’t the hydrogen peroxide make him a blonde?

Your dog looks like a stuffed toy. ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!
If a dog gets skunked, the owner holding the leash might also get skunked. I fear it every night when I walk our dog Max around 11 p.m. or later!

Your dog is very sweet! I have a Lasa Apso your dog looks a little like mine. I have been through the skunk smell when my other dog got sprayed, its a horrific smell.

Cute pupper!
The deskunking recipe works well but there’s no need to add tomato juice. I don’t know how the tomato juice advice gets around so much – it really does NOT work that well! Take it from someone who has had to de-skunk on a number of occasions.
I have big dogs with high prey drive and we’ve had many a wildlife encounter (a few of which didn’t turn out so well for the wildlife….) Once my smaller, stupider Rottweiler Daphne got into a fight with a skunk. Daphne zero, Skunk two. It not only sprayed her directly in the face (her poor eyes were completely bloodshot red) but scratched the heck out of her nose. I don’t think it was hurt at all, thankfully. It bounced off in triumph leaving her on the ground pawing her face. Rather amusing to see a big tough dog get humiliated and vanquished by a 4lb little fluffy animal!

I guess Carina answered my question. I had always heard that tomato juice was good for this, but have always been puzzled about why it would do anything. Anyway, just hope this adorable dog will never need to have the formula.

Cute dog! TOMATO JUICE? I think I understand that it’s a neutralizer, but what a mess. I can’t imagine the “leave on for 15 minutes”…we’d end up with a red timged room!
We live on salt water, so we deal with mud, seaweed and dead fish smell occasionally. Yuck! Eventually our 110pd golden retriver cleans up, but it can take a few washings. During the summer I pretty much give up and wait for the beauty parlour visit every 6 weeks or so.

OMG.. your pup is just adorable.
I have survived my dog being skunked. It was awful. I wish I had this recipe back then. You can bet I will be keeping a copy of it handy.
