A Whole Bunch of Books for Baby Boomers

Rightsizing.jpgThere are more and more books being published for baby boomers these days. Here are a few new titles I recently collected:

Leap! What Will We Do with the Rest of Our Lives? by Sara Davidson. The author is on a quest to learn how to spend the coming years well. She interviews an array of intriguing people.

Boomsday by Christopher Buckley. A satirical novel that recommends tax breaks for elderly boomers who agree to commit suicide by a given age in order to help the ailing Social Security system.

I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron. The famed author and screenwriter writes thoughtful 15 essays that basically lament, “It’s sad to be over sixty.”

Rightsizing Your Life: Simplifying Your Surroundings While Keeping What Matters Most by Ciji Ware. A practical book for midlife people who are starting to re-evaluate their surroundings as their kids begin to leave the nest and they begin thinking about retirement.

Carved in Sand: Why Memory Fades in Midlife by Cathryn Jakobson Ramin writes about progressive memory loss among adults in their 50s and 60s.

Is it Hot in Here? Or is it Me? The Complete Guide to Menopause by Pat Wingert and Barbara Kantrowitz. Two Newsweek health writers write about everything a woman might encounter before, during and after menopause.

Thinking About Tomorrow
by Susan Crandell (former editor-in-chief of More magazine). The book looks at 45 people who reinvented themselves at midlife and the lessons they learned along the way.

I read Carved in Sand and reviewed on my site. Verrrrry interesting.

  2. Beverly Mahone Says:

I want to throw my own book into the mix: “Whatever! A Baby Boomer’s Journey Into Middle Age.” I talk about menopause, weight gain, healthy eating, being a single parent and dating again at middle age, leaving Corporate America to pursue your passion, etc…it’s a great read—full of humor and some people have even told me they shed a few tears. So check it out. Available on amazon.com

I know I have posted here before, but just wanted to point out again that there is a nice new site called BOOMj.com. It is especially for baby boomers and I think some of your readers may be interested. You’ve got a nice blog here by the way.

Hey! Don’t forget me. Confessions a middle aged spendthrift!

I really don’t have time for “generational” books.
I don’t care about what others plan to do with their lives, whether they’ve saved for retirement, how their bodies are faring, etc., etc.
I care about me and those close to me.

Just want to call attention to my blog for Baby Boomers who are thinking about what to do next. My slant is about keeping mind and body challenged doing some meaningful “work/play,” whether that’s paid work, entrepreneurship, Peace Corps or a shorter alternative, Cross Cultural Solutions, gardening, or getting to know your real Self without your career.

  7. Jacqueline Wales Says:

There are a slew of good and interesting books out there about the Boomers and a lot of rubbish as well. Beverly Mahone’s is not one of them! She says it like it is, and doesn’t hold back. Read it. You’ll find it full of humor. We all need a good belly laugh now, don’t we? Especially when it jiggles!!!!

And by the way, shamelessly self-promoting, check out fearlessfifties.com I’d like to add my 2 cents to the materials available on what Boomers are doing, or not……

  8. Casey Dawes Says:

I’ve read a few “boomer” books (well, more than a few) and find that the general ones don’t resonate with me. Many of them focus on high level of subjects such as finance, travel and retirement living. If it’s a story that’s intriguing — that’s interesting. If it explores a subject in depth — that’s interesting. And, as Gerry said, if it’s something that affects me or my loved ones personally, I’m all over it. I also find that I want to read more books on spirituality as well as what’s happening in the world. These stimulate my brain and make me think.

  9. Rhea Says:

Curm: Thanks for letting us know.
Beverly and boomie: Great. Thanks for adding!
    Boomj: Welcome!
    Gerry: Fair enough.
    Karma: Welcome!
    Jacqueline: Thanks for writing in.
Casey: I think a lot of the books are class-based. Many appeal only to those with good assets.

Just to let you know — my book, “The Outrageous Diary Of A Retired Baby Boomer”, (Vol. 1), 2006 is being featured by Mostly Fiction Amazon’s BookStore. Available, natch, at Amazon.com, it’s about the angst of ageing, with poignant humor, gut-rending sadness along with pitfalls of retirement, and sublime happenings. Pure fiction — everyone who’s read it loves it! I know, just a shameless plug, but it’s a good read.
