Boston Says ‘No’ to WalMart

I've Moved! The Boomer Chronicles has closed after 6 years, but you can keep up with me on my new blog at http://www.rheabecker.com

I am so happy to report that Boston Mayor Menino will not endorse a Walmart that is aiming to set up in the city. I couldn’t be happier. Here is quote from a Boston official: “Dudley Square is a unique and special place in the heart of the city, and we don’t believe Walmart is in keeping with that uniqueness,’’ said the mayor’s spokeswoman, Dot Joyce.

It’s the rare city that can stand up to the pressure that mega-corporation Walmart applies. What happened to anti-trust legislation in this country?

If you want to learn more about how Walmart operates, check out the documentary WalMart: The High Cost of Low Price.

Here’s a whole bunch of anti-Walmart websites.

I am anti-Walmart. I shop there because there are tons of products and I save a lot of money. Great option for people who are laid off and desperate to make meals stretch. They don’t care about how unique the town looks. Really now. They care about feeding their FAMILY.
ALSO, I work with seniors. These are 70-something folks that can only work one place — guess where? Walmart, which hires 70-somethings and the disabled. Yes, that’s true, they are working their butts off at Walmart. Do you think the unique little town will hired these seniors? Just trying to bring some sense to the conversation. : )

I meant to say I am NOT anti Walmart. oops!

    Hello Rea,

How’s life? That’s interesting that the Mayor would stand up and not get resistance seeing that there are lots of consumers in that area who would probably want it. Since he is moving to Dudley Square, maybe he wanted to make sure to keep the traffic and craziness that often comes with a Walmart to a minimum. What if they started making mini Walmarts? I wonder how they would fly? Remember I said that in case they try it. I will have to get my cut.

Anyone who does not shop at Walmart is a fool. To give away money in favor of unions and political correctness is just plain stupid.
I will continue to shop at Walmart and look forward to early retirement with all the money I have saved.

Liberals have a problem with WalMart because it “takes away mom and pop stores” according to most liberals. Liberals never complain about other stores that basically killed mom and pop stores, such as Kroger and all supermarkets, malls, Sears, JC Penny, Home Depot, Lowes, Pier1, dollar stores, Fred’s, Best Buy, Circuit City, Burlington Coat, etc. I could go on for hours. None of them call for these stores to close, except WalMart, which statistically helps the poor to buy middle class items. Liberals want the poor to remain poor [recall Obama canceled a DC program that paid for poor, mostly black children, to go to private schools for free].
They hate WalMart because it is a pro-family, conservative organization that, for example, still mentions Christmas. They hate us conservatives.
