Me and Paul Revere

I've Moved! The Boomer Chronicles has closed after 6 years, but you can keep up with me on my new blog at http://www.rheabecker.com

paulrevere.jpg Once in a while I need to jolt my life by taking on an entirely new enterprise outside of my day job. Last year, I became a tour guide at The Old North Church. I am a Boston history buff and relished the idea of spending time at this important landmark in American history.

I learned the five-minute spiel and recited it whenever 10 or more tourists walked through the doors.

The best part of the experience was all the facts I learned! Here are a few:

Foreigners tip way better than Americans
English people are really forgiving
The view of Boston from the steeple really rocks

Oh, and the historical facts I learned, well…ah, I’ll save that for another post.

You make the historical facts seem so ominous!

Oh, I didn’t mean to! Although, the Old North Church IS haunted!

I have a legal document from the late 1700’s that says that the New-Brick Church and the Old North Meeting House (or Church, as it is called both in the document) became the Second Church. How could this be when one is Anglican and one is congregational? Second, what was Christ Church called in 1775? If Christ Church was not called “The Old North” in 1775 as my document suggests, why would we assume that Paul Revere meant “Christ Church” (what we call the Old North today) if Christ Church was not called the Old North in 1775? Isn’t that the same as someone saying “Put the lanterns in the Baptist Church when he really meant the Methodist Church?

    Hi, Rhea

I once caught some flounder with some friends and brought the catch to a restaurant which has since closed, Abruzi, right down the sreet from Paul Rever’s house or where he made things from silver? It was cooked to perfection. The North End sounds like the Nort End when spoken by North Enders. I could eat some cheese cake right now with some expresso. Tippers – I was a waiter in the Catskills, summers going to college. If you got a table from Beantown. Forget about it. Low tippers. Sorry.
